As nurses prepare to retire, shortage is getting critical for hospitals

Loretta Gall has been a nurse most of her life. “I’m a nurse because of economic necessity and my love of the profession,” said 66-year-old Gall, who got her nursing license in 1963. The economic downturn nearly decimated her retirement account. The Orlando resident plans to work a few more years to build her savings back up. But soon, she will stop working — as will thousands of other nurses who have delayed retirement for the time being.

Florida lacks enough new nurses to make up for the large numbers of nurses approaching retirement age within the next decade, according to a May report by the Florida Center for Nursing. Read More…
