Two years ago, Phillip Morris was flying high in an executive career at Medjet Assist, a medical evacuation company he helped build.
When he took a buyout in late 2007, Morris figured he’d take time off to travel and then land a job when he returned. Only problem was, by mid-2008, executive-level jobs were scarce.
“I said, ‘Thank you, God. I have a nursing degree,’” said Morris, 48, who has dusted off his nursing skills from the 1980s and began practicing again at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.
Hospitals in the Birmingham area reflect many such stories, with nurses returning to the bedside and older nurses putting off their retirements.
