Genes can have a remarkably different effect depending on which parent you inherit them from.
Scientists from deCode Genetics, an Icelandic biotech company, have found a genetic variation that raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes more than 30 per cent if it is inherited from your father, but reduces the chance by more then 10 per cent if it comes from your mother.
