A mother who gave her daughter a kidney in a life-saving operation had more reason that most to feel nervous… because the surgeon was a ROBOT.
It was the first time the procedure had been performed by a machine in Europe.
Manuela Staderini, 57, underwent the 50 minute surgery to save her daughter Giuliana Campanani, 37, suffering from chronic renal failure.
The machine – dubbed the ‘Da Vinci’ robot – was used at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy.
The kidney transplant was performed using incredibly precise 3mm incisions followed by further 5cm cuts below the stomach before the kidney was transplanted.
Both mother and daughter have been discharged following the procedure earlier this month with surgeons hailing the robo-op as a complete success. Read more…
