Pen removed from woman’s tummy after 25 years

LONDON: An elderly woman in Britain had a pen stuck in her stomach for 25 years. The 76-year-old accidentally swallowed the felt-tip pen in the 1980s when using it to hold down her tongue while checking her tonsils in a mirror, Daily Express reported Thursday. But no one believed her at the time because hospital scans revealed nothing and she completely forgot about it. The plastic pen was removed when she went to see a gastrointestinal specialist after suffering from severe stomach pains, weight loss and diarrhoea. Read more…

Twins born in Brazil with two heads, one heart

Conjoined twins have been born in Brazil with two heads, two functioning brains and two backbones – but a single heart. The rare condition is thought to have occurred when one of the pair failed to fully develop in the womb. Doctors say separating the twins, named Jesus and Emanuel, is not currently an option because there is only one set of organs, Reuters reports. They are being monitored by specialists to see how they develop. Dr Neila Dahas, who is treating the newborns, said surgery was not being considered at the moment. Read more…

Long-term high blood insulin levels are known to raise cancer risk. These findings were presented by scientists from Genesis Prevention Center at University Hospital in South Manchester, England, at the 2011 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The researchers stressed that a larger, longer-term additional study is required. Michelle Harvie,...

Sex advice: Teen thinks sexting is funny

DEAR ISADORA: My teenage daughter tells me that some of her friends are sexting, sending photos of each other partially undressed. She thinks it’s funny. How can I convince her that this is wrong? Dear Isadora: My boyfriend doesn’t fight fair. He calls me all sorts of terrible names...

The laser that turns brown eyes blue?

Some people cry over the hue of their eyes. If only they were blue, rather than muddy brown. And, well, brown eyes don’t look so good with your dyed-blonde hair. An inventor in California believes he has found the solution. Gregg Homer, founder of Stroma Medical, says that, in a mere 20 seconds, he can turn old brown eyes into old blue eyes. Or even young ones. The way Homer told it to KTLA News, brown eyes are actually blue. Well, beneath the brown pigment that covers the iris, there is apparently a blue-looking orb. Read more…
