Passage of overhaul measure expected today; Republicans label it unconstitutional
By James Oliphant – Tribune Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON — – With Senate Democrats poised to pass a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s health care system, Republicans sought Wednesday to frame the bill as a tarnished product of backroom deals and political maneuvering, with some going so far as to declare it illegal.
Much of the day had the feel of the final minutes of a football game in which the outcome already had been decided. As Republican senators raised new criticisms of the measure, Democrats...

WASHINGTON–David Axelrod, an adviser to President Barack Obama, predicted health-care legislation would pass “soon,” after Senate Democrats on Saturday secured the 60 votes needed to clear a path for quick Senate passage of the measure.
“We’re right on the one-yard line” with Senate Democrats reaching a deal, Mr. Axelrod said on CNN’s “State of the Union” which aired Sunday. “I believe this is going to happen soon…. People understand we’re on the doorstep of doing something really historic that will help the American...

Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) — Senate Democrats, trying to round up 60 votes for health-care legislation, face new challenges to their goal of passing a bill by Christmas as they confront both Republican stalling tactics and other pressing business.
The Senate took up a $636 billion defense-spending measure that includes $128 billion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That and Republican delays — such as insisting that each amendment be read word for word — mean work won’t resume on health care until the weekend. And the votes needed for passage aren’t...

WASHINGTON — After months of turmoil, President Barack Obama is calling Senate Democrats to the White House to say it’s time to come together and pass legislation embracing a wholesale remodeling of America’s health care system.
The meeting set for Tuesday afternoon comes a day after Senate Democratic leaders suggested they were ready to abandon the last vestiges of a government-run insurance program that liberals have long sought, in order to placate moderates and secure the 60 votes they need to overcome united GOP opposition.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,...
