GALESBURG — Roughly 240 teddy bears and other stuffed animals received check-ups courtesy of Carl Sandburg College nursing students this past week.
The toys accompanied the same number of Knox, Warren and Fulton County preschoolers to the eighth annual Teddy Bear Clinic on Wednesday and Thursday.
The clinic blends community outreach with classroom education as second-year students in CSC’s professional nursing program take kids through a series of informative stations ranging from fire safety to proper hand-washing techniques.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment of registered nurses is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018. The BLS cites technological advances in patient care, the increasing emphasis on preventive care, and the aging baby boomers as drivers of the field’s growth. According to new survey data released by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), enrollment in doctoral nursing programs increased by more than 20% this year, signaling strong interest among students in careers as nursing scientists, faculty, primary care providers, and specialists. Ashland University and MedCentral Health System of Mansfield have signed a letter of intent to transfer MedCentral’s College of Nursing operations to Ashland University beginning July 1, 2010.
The Boards of Trustees of both institutions have approved the intent to negotiate final agreements, which are expected to be signed later this spring. Located in Mansfield, Ohio, the MedCentral College of Nursing has approximately 380 students enrolled in a traditional nursing education program as well as an accelerated program.

A pelvic exam can be an uncomfortable experience, not just for the patient but also for the person doing the procedure — especially if that person is a medical student who has never performed an intimate exam on a real-life woman.
To prepare doctors-to-be for their first time in an exam room with a woman whose feet are in stirrups, medical schools often bring in paid patients who tell the students if something hurts and, in some instances, instruct students on how to perform the exam. Read More…

The age old adage “practice makes perfect” may not always be true, but for senior nursing students, the practice represents the perfect situation.
A Feb. 16 Kernel article documented the heart attack of Henry Wall, also known as SimMan. SimMan is one of five robots the College of Nursing uses to perform simulations as routine as breathing and as serious as a heart attack.
The clinical simulations facility at UK consists of more than 10,000 square feet of labs and classrooms dedicated to training nursing students.

While high school seniors are still waiting to hear back from colleges, Penn’s Nursing class of 2014 can finally relax.
Dean of Admissions Eric Furda confirmed that Penn notified applicants to the Nursing School about their admissions decisions on Friday, Feb. 19.
Continuing Penn’s trend of increased applications this year, nursing applications went up 26 percent.
The Nursing class will be the most selective ever, with a 20-percent acceptance rate, according to Furda. Read More…

The long-running debate about whether registered nurses should be required to have more than an associate’s degree punctuated the discussion in Houston on Monday during a national forum on the profession’s future.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is calling for every patient with a long-term condition to have access to specialist nursing care.
It wants guaranteed funding to avoid cutbacks in specialist nurses after the general election.
It says specialist nurses save money through reduced complications and fewer hospital re-admissions.
