People ‘denied’ die at home wish

Too many people are dying in hospitals and care homes, and not at home the way they want to, says a report from Demos. Of the 500,000 people who die each year in the UK, the think tank found only 18% die at home, yet 60% of people surveyed would like to. Investing in community-based end of life care would also save the NHS money in the long term, the report says. The Department of Health is reviewing funding for England. Services in the rest of the UK are funded locally. The report, entitled Dying for Change predicts that by 2030 more people will die in hospital (65%) and fewer people will die...

Want to eat like a caveman? Try being more polite

Sight of Meat Puts People at Ease, Study Suggests Finding surprised researchers who expected a more aggressive response FRIDAY, Nov. 12 (HealthDay News) — That feeling of goodwill when family and friends gather for the Thanksgiving meal may be due to the fact that the sight of meat on the table calms people, a new study suggests. The researchers in the psychology department at McGill University in Montreal were surprised by their finding. They had expected that seeing meat would make people more aggressive. “I was inspired by research on priming and aggression, that has shown that...

How could anyone say a drug that gives my husband extra weeks of life isn’t worth it?

By Irma Heger Don’t worry, it won’t be stomach cancer, my best friend emailed me the night before my husband was due to attend a hospital appointment. She knows about my mild hypochondria by proxy. Fatal last words. It was a sunny spring day last year when the man I’d been with for 20 years drove to the hospital on his way home from work. He whistled along to the radio, not suspecting anything worse than acid reflux or a stomach ulcer. Heartburn and trouble swallowing hardly seemed life-threatening conditions. ‘No need for you to come,’ he had said when I’d suggested accompanying...

Why Women Are Unhappier Than They’ve Been in Years

ELLE investigates a new study that suggests the fairer sex is seriously bummed By Rachael Combe If this doesn’t seem to reflect what’s going on in your home, the problem may be more qualitative than quantitative. While you and your husband may be logging about the same number of hours of work, some recent surveys show that he may be enjoying his more. In other words, men may be cherrypicking the good stuff and leaving the “shit work” to women, who are supposed to be grateful for the opportunities in the office and the help at home. “It’s a controversy in research, deciding if an activity...

‘Genes behind long life found’

“Genes that mean you will live to 100” have been discovered by scientists, said The Daily Telegraph. The news is based on a study by US scientists who have built a genetic model that can predict exceptional longevity, defined as survival well beyond the average human lifespan, with 77% accuracy. This is an interesting study that built and tested a genetic model for exceptional longevity in over 1,000 centenarians and 1,200 control subjects. It indicates that genetic factors play a critical and complex role in living an exceptionally long time. However, as the scientists note, their model is...

Why men will judge a woman in milliseconds

Men take a fraction of a second to decide if they are attracted to a woman or not – but they should not be called shallow because they are genetically programmed to do so, scientists say. Men weigh up potential partners almost instantaneously based on their appearance because their “ancient” genetic preference for attractive mates leads them to, experts claim. According to research, a woman with an attractive face is taken by men to be fertile and able to continue the family line, appealing to the man’s survival instinct. In contrast women take longer to decide their feelings...

Men suffer most when relationship breaks

They may look stronger and braver than women, but men suffer the most when a relationship is rocky, a new study has claimed. Researchers at the Wake Forest University in the US found that the pangs of broken-heart have a greater effect on the mental health of young men than the fair sex — contradicting the stereotypical image of stoic men who are unaffected by what happens in their relationships. While women are more likely to display their depression to friends, men are more likely to store up their feelings – with negative health effects including making them more likely to drink...
